Rose and I

Jane Tsao

Rose and I were classmates when we were in senior high school. I thought that we would definitely go to different cities to study after graduating from high school. However, I was wrong. God let us go to the same university. It was during the summer vacation when she called me and told me that she had been admitted to Chinese Culture University. At that time, I was extremely excited because I could still get along with her in the same campus. Now, we are going to graduate. During these four years I have found out that Rose and I are getting more and more different in three aspects: our thinking style, learning attitude and working experience.

First of all, the ways we think are different. She has to study literature,[w1]  for example;[w2]  her favorite is Greek mythology. She is kind of romantic and sentimental. However, my major is law. I study criminal law, civil law and so on. We emphasize on independent thinking and finding where the issues or problem are. Therefore, when we discuss something or observe something, I tend to take a more practical approach. By contrast, Rose usually relies on her intuition and personal preferences.

Our attitudes toward learning are quite unlike too. Rose told me there is a lot of homework in English department. She has to hand in four compositions in one semester. In addition, she also has to give presentations in the conversation class. Rose sometimes forgets doing her homework so she will delay her assignments. On the other hand, in law department there is not much homework except some classes. However, it does not mean we do not have to study. Actually, many law department students go to the library quite often. Some students hate law students because they always occupy many seats during the exam.

Last but not least, unlike me, Rose has many work experiences. When she was a sophomore, she worked as babysitter. Her job was to accompany and play with a four-year-old girl. After being a babysitter, she became an English teacher teaching little kids English. Rose said that teaching students made her happy and she also learned from the children. Work experiences let her get to know more about herself and her interest. She also had to learn to communicate with the children’s parents. However, I have no work experience. Every semester I have so many credits to take. One of the graduation requirements for a law student is completing a minimum of 148 credits. But the graduation requirement for an English major is only 128 credits. Moreover, I minor in English. Thus, I have 30 more credits to take, which means if I do not want to delay my graduation, I have to complete 178 credits in four years. I really admire Rose in this regard because I want to have some work experiences. I think I should go outside to see what is happening, not just studying in the school.

To sum up, there were not big differences between Rose and I when we were in senior high school. Nevertheless, after we entered different departments, many things have changed gradually. Our ways of thinking are different. I am sometimes more critical than she. She, on the other hand, seems to become more romantic and outgoing than I. Besides, she did not skip classes and delayed her assignments in high school, but now she does not even show up for classes sometimes and delay her homework frequently. We are both twenty-two years old now. She has already had two work experiences but I have none. I consider we are going two separate ways just because we entered the different fields in college.
