My Fear of Dogs

Janice Chen

Every time I see dogs on the street, I always hide behind the back of someone who is not afraid of dogs or just stands there shivering with scared looks. My parents were busy for work, so I had to take buses home when I was an elementary school student. One winter day I got off the bus as usual. I saw there were almost five or six dogs wandering near the bus stop. At first, they just followed me quietly and I walked as fast as I could. Then, they started to bark at me and blocked my way home. I was too timid to pass through the crowd of the dogs, so I called my friend for help. But I forgot that her home was quite far away from my home. The dogs continuously approached me. My heart beat violently. Suddenly I heard someone call my name. I was really delighted to see my mom and the dogs went away. But after I finally went home, my brother told my parents that he wanted to keep a dog as pet. My parents knew that I was afraid of dogs, so they refused his request. But his stubbornness defeated my dread of dogs. Our family had a new member. He was so small when the first time I saw him. I was really scared to touch him, so I avoided the place where he would stay. He always lies down on my brother’s thigh. Once my brother asked me to take care of his dogs. I was so nervous that I did not dare to stay with a dog alone. But after I got along with him, I found out why people would keep dogs as their pets. They not only are loyal but also have ability to console human beings when they are frustrated. I am used to getting along with dog gradually. Since that day, I won’t shiver anymore if I saw dogs. I conquer my fear of dogs and not a coward anymore.
