A Family Joke

Yi-yu Kuo

I have never been a fan of anything wild or thrilling; however, a part of me cracked one summer and I was beginning to enjoy anything getting my adrenaline rising. Once, my dad took my sister and me to an amusement park which now becomes an unforgettable event in my childhood. Most of the rides were like trains going insane, but one ride caught my eye. It had seats hanging down like swings and the mere thought of going on such an enchanting ride exhilarated me. After inducing my sister to come with me, I was seated and waited restlessly, whereas my sister kept repeating, “I can’t believe I’m doing this.” Suddenly, the ride began. It started out slowly but gradually became faster and faster until the ride itself opened up like a flower, then steadily becoming a weeping willow as it was in the beginning. As soon as it was over, I bounced off my seat in triumph and scurried to find my sister, who seemed confused and stumbling like a blind giant. From out of the blue, a cascade of vomiting spewed out of her mouth. In front of her was a four-year-old boy, who seemed fascinated and surprised by what he saw. My dad led my sister to a nearby trashcan while I roared uncontrollably with laughter. As I turned around to see the man-made puddle, a man was already hosing it down to a nearby gutter as if he had anticipated something like this would have happened. It was quite insensitive of me to laugh at my sister back then, but what transpired was so memorable that it is now a family joke.
