Should People Have the Right to Carry a Handgun?

Carrying a concealed handgun is legal in most states of America, which means the civilians are allowed to keep the gun hidden under one's control. Many people believe carrying a gun can protect themselves when in danger because they think calling the police will take more time. Nevertheless, I believe that carrying a handgun will create more problems and issues although most people are mature enough to think before their actions. In my opinion, the three reasons that people should not carry a handgun are: humans are emotional, carrying a handgun will increase more crimes, and public safety should be left to the police.

First, people should not have the right to carry a concealed handgun because humans are emotional. Humans are flawed and imperfect although they may bemature. People sometimes cannot control their temper and emotion, and being emotional can lead to irrationality, and therefore impetuosity. For example, on Jan. 13, 2014, an American retired policeman shot and killed another man during an argument. This shows that an argument could become lethal when one carries a hidden handgun.

Second, the number of crimes will increase if people are allowed to carry a handgun. Although there are background checks when the security issue is concerned, it is not possible to know the intentions of the people who are purchasing handguns. In addition, some people can buy handguns from a private seller and the buyers are not required for a background check. Therefore, there is always some risk to allow people to buy and own handguns. There will be unpredictable violence and crimes if we continue authorizing people the right of carrying a handgun.

Last, people should not carry a handgun to protect themselves as public safety should be left to professionally qualified police officers. Police officers take professional training to uphold the country's safety and harmony. It is their responsibilities and duties to protect the citizens and guarantee a peaceful environment. On the other hand, ordinary people are usually not required to take trainings for holding and using a gun. Therefore, it is rather dangerous for them to carry handguns. In addition, some free thinkers can easily arouse insurrections if they own any weapon. It is hard for the police to suppress armed rebellions and protect the other citizens at the same time.

In conclusion, people’s carrying handguns is not appropriate. It may increase more crimes and the society will be turbulent and unsafe. Therefore, people should be forbidden to carry a handgun. On the other hand, the government should strengthen the training of policemen so they can protect the citizens well. Moreover, the police should carry out more patrols and give the citizens a sense of safety so they can trust them for their work efficiency.
