My First Halloween Party

Cara Yee

This past Halloween, the place that I work as an English teaching assistant held a Halloween party for the students. Halloween was an unfamiliar festival to me and I have never attended a Halloween party when I was in Malaysia. We seldom celebrate this festival, and thus the mere cognition I had about it is learnt from the movies and I had never had relevant experience. When I was informed to assist the party, I felt intensely excited. It was the first Halloween party I attended and I enjoyed a lot as it was a very special experience I had in Taiwan.

I remember when the principal inquired me to dress up and assist the party, I agreed immediately. After that, I began to worry about my Halloween costumes. I even asked my friends to give me some advice and I was so hesitant about choosing the best one. Finally, I decided to disguise myself as a little girl Agnes, the character from "Despicable Me." Then I started to borrow costumes from my friends and one of them agreed to help me dress up on that day. We met at the MRT station in the afternoon and she started to help me make up. We just sat on the bench outside the station so everyone who passed by was very curious. It was a funny experience to do such things in front of other people.

After making up, I left the MRT station and headed to my working place by bus. I felt so embarrassed so I kept my head down all the way. When I reached my working place, all my co-workers gazed at me and laughed. They said I really looked like a little girl with an extremely high pony tail and trimmed short bangs. Luckily, all of them said that it suited me very well. Furthermore, we started to decorate the haunted house which was the main theme at that night. It was not an easy task for us to spend six hours completing our themed haunted house -- an obsolescent hospital.

One of my co-workers was very excited and began to walk around the haunted house. Meanwhile, the other co-worker decided to make fun of her. He hid under a table at the exit, so as to catch her leg and scare her. Additionally, he asked me to record it with his cellphone so I stood at the corner of the exit to capture the funny moment. We could hear that her voice was nearby; afterward a loud scream burst in the air followed by laughter. We succeeded! It was nothing but interesting that we could spend the day together and play around during working time. After playing around, we began to prepare ourselves and waited for the students' attendance.

Later, the students came continuously when the event time was getting closer. It was gratifying to see them enjoying this special event though some of them cried because of the frightful haunted house. When the event was over, the principal then invited us to the celebration feast for our great effort. We spent the entire day together and I really enjoyed the special event with such wonderful co-workers. They are like my family members who take good care of me and it was my pleasure to have my first Halloween party with them.
