Meatloaf Marsala is a delicious fusion of traditional meatloaf and Italian flavors, featuring a moist, seasoned meatloaf topped with a rich Marsala wine and mushroom gravy. This dish offers a comforting and hearty meal, perfect for family dinners or special occasions. The Marsala wine adds a depth of flavor that elevates the classic meatloaf to a gourmet experience.
For the Meatloaf:
1 pound ground beef or chicken
1/2 cup bread crumbs
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/4 cup milk
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
For the Marsala Mushroom Gravy:
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup sliced mushrooms
1/2 cup Marsala wine
1/2 cup beef or chicken broth
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
Salt and pepper to taste
Prepare the Meatloaf:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large bowl, combine ground beef or chicken, bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, milk, egg, salt, black pepper, oregano, basil, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix until well combined.
Transfer the meat mixture into a greased loaf pan and shape it into a loaf.
Place the loaf pan in the preheated oven and bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the meatloaf reaches an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
Prepare the Marsala Mushroom Gravy:
While the meatloaf is baking, melt butter in a skillet over medium heat.
Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet and sauté until they release their moisture and become golden brown, about 5–7 minutes.
Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and stir to combine. Cook for 1 minute to eliminate the raw flour taste.
Slowly pour in the Marsala wine, stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
Add the beef or chicken broth and continue to stir until the gravy thickens, about 3–5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serve:
Once the meatloaf is cooked, remove it from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
Serve slices of meatloaf topped with the Marsala mushroom gravy.
