These Crispy Smashed Sweet Potatoes are a delightful blend of crunchy exteriors and tender interiors, delivering a satisfying texture and a burst of flavor. The secret to their crispiness lies in the technique of smashing the sweet potato slices before baking, ensuring golden edges every time. Coated with a flavorful mixture of olive oil, cornstarch, and spices, and finished with a drizzle of honey, these potatoes make for an irresistible snack or side dish.
For the Smashed Sweet Potatoes:
600g sweet potato
2½ tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons cornstarch
½ teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon sriracha
½ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
½–1 teaspoon flaked sea salt (adjust to taste)
1 teaspoon honey
For the Garlic Yoghurt Sauce:
¼ cup (90g) thick Greek-style yoghurt
Salt and pepper to taste
½ teaspoon garlic powder or 1 finely chopped garlic clove (adjust to preference)
Prepare the Sweet Potatoes: Peel and slice the sweet potatoes into 3 cm thick rounds. Boil them with a pinch of salt until easily pierced with a knife, approximately 5–8 minutes.
Preheat Oven or Air Fryer: Set your oven to 180°C (350°F). If using an air fryer, preheat it accordingly.
Smash the Potatoes: Drain the boiled sweet potatoes. Place them in a single layer on a baking tray. Cover each slice with a small square of baking paper and use a glass or container to gently smash each slice to just under 1 cm thick.
Season the Potatoes: In a bowl, mix the olive oil, cornstarch, garlic powder, sriracha, black pepper, and flaked sea salt. Brush this mixture over the smashed sweet potato slices, ensuring both sides are coated.
Bake or Air Fry: Place the prepared sweet potatoes in the oven or air fryer. Bake for 30–40 minutes, flipping halfway through, until they are crispy and golden brown.
Prepare the Garlic Yoghurt Sauce: While the sweet potatoes are cooking, mix the thick Greek-style yoghurt with salt, pepper, and garlic powder or finely chopped garlic clove to taste.
Finish the Potatoes: Once the sweet potatoes are nearly cooked, drizzle the honey over them and cook for the final few minutes until sticky.
Serve: Remove from the oven or air fryer, season with additional salt and pepper if desired, and serve immediately with the garlic yoghurt dipping sauce.
