Various websites recommend that you use a laptop to reduce your carbon footprint.
HOWEVER...
There is a very big However.
How often do you update your computer?
Do you buy a new computer every couple years to have the latest and best?
Or are you like me, and you only replace your computer when it breaks down?
Because if you do, a desktop probably has a smaller carbon footprint.
Because desktops last much, much longer.
I used to have to replace my laptop every couple of years.
That was years and years ago.
I now have a desktop.
This is probably my second desktop since Drew Brees and the Saints won the Super Bowl.
It is now 2025. The Eagles are set to play Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs for the second time in three years.
Yes. That's how much longer a desktop will last.
I am quite sure that I am reducing my carbon footprint by using a desktop, since I searched on the Internet, and it takes a lot more energy to make a computer than to run one.
Instead of having to replace my laptop maybe four or five times since Drew Brees and the Saints won the Super Bowl, I've only had to replace my desktop ONCE.
And if my last desktop is any indication, this one still has years left in it.
There you go.
Wanna reduce your carbon footprint?
If you only buy a computer when the old one breaks down, don't go with a laptop unless you really want or need a laptop.
A desktop will last much, much longer.
And consuming less has other benefits for the environment besides just your carbon footprint. Like creating less trash.
Just giving some helpful advice for those who like me want to live a low-consumption lifestyle! It pays to buy things that last if you want to consume less!
Hope this helps someone!
God loves you!
Sincerely,
David S. Annderson
P.S. If you really want a computer that lasts, get a custom like mine, from an indie local computer shop. A custom from an indie local computer shop, like an Apple, will use the best parts, and last much longer. Unlike an Apple, you can be sure that the PC format for desktops and laptops will still be supported in 20 or 30 years.
Whereas in 15 or 20 years, who knows if Apple will even still sell laptops or desktops? Apple chases the new. I don't. I have a custom PC instead.
It costs only about what an Apple will cost, and it will last and last. And yes, local and family-owned is always best. If you want good service and quality, that is.
