It is 2024, and I am looking at the year so far in American cinema on Wikipedia.
Some eras in Hollywood are all about the standout few movies, and not the many.
The age of James Cameron's Avatar, Lord of the Rings, and the Marvel movies is ending.
Looking at the top 10 highest grossing movies from the English-language world so far this year, each and every one is a sequel.
Sure, a couple of them are clearly classic sequels, most likely.
But still, the slow quiet death of the early-2000's age in Hollywood is certain.
Meanwhile, the past few years have brought the first two shots of a stunning cinematic revolution.
Everything Everywhere all at Once.
And the Barbie movie.
Everything Everywhere all at Once is the cinematic equivalent of At the Lighthouse, or James Joyce's Ulysses.
Only not.
Because it does it completely differently from any literary work.
It does experimental modernism as a work of philosophy, a looking for meaning.
The Barbie Movie is clearly the second great shot in this cinematic revolution.
The Barbie Movie is also one of the very first major blockbuster movies to be made by women for women.
Look back at this era in American cinema with awe.
For the many movies may be a dissappointment.
But the few are just simply earth-shattering, in the best, most brilliant way possible.
Who knows what this cinematic revolution will bring?
We have only to wait for it and see.
I look forward to it.
God loves you!
Sincerely,
David S. Annderson
