Two things tower above everything released out of mainstream American and British music since John Lennon's death like a towering redwood tree towers above sagebrush.
One of them is the work of Whitney Houston.
The other is Stevie Nicks's Edge of Seventeen.
The Last Classic Rock Epic! To stand alongside the likes of Stairway to Heaven, Dark Side of the Moon and Love, Reign O'er Me!
Thank you, Stevie Nicks!
God loves you!
Sincerely,
David S. Annderson
P.S. Make that four things- you can add the lyrics to Tearin up my Heart by N*SYNC (read them before you dismiss them!) and the lyrics to Survivor by Beyonce and Destiny's Child!
P.S. Seven things- I just discovered 'Making Movies' and 'Love over Gold' by Dire Straits! Maybe Edge of Seventeen is not the last classic rock epic? (which came out later?)
It's like these two albums and the Stevie Nicks song are coming from another planet from the rest of the scene at that time that I am aware of!
(Not that the rest of the music scene at the time wasn't a really interesting one with lots of good music!)
And the seventh is 'Let the River Run' by Carly Simon, which I simply somehow overlooked when I first wrote this!
((I know that 'Making Movies' was actually from 1980, but it feels like it belongs with the scene after John Lennon's death because it leads into 'Love over Gold' from 1982, and the two albums belong together!))
((What I have heard of 'Brothers in Arms' is just a good pop album by comparison. It's like comparing the music to Tearin up my Heart by N*SYNC to the lyrics- great, but 'Making Movies' and 'Love over Gold' are a whole nother level of greatness. 'Brothers in Arms' was for bringing them to the masses in hopes that more people would also discover 'Making Movies' and 'Love over Gold'.))
((Only the lyrics to Tearin up my Heart are more philosophy, and 'Making Movies' and 'Love over Gold' are more poetry storytelling. Not that there might be philosophy in there as well.))
