Advice to Artists: Feeling and Doing It for the Right Reasons

I just came from a couple of Youtube videos teaching writing.

And they teach you all the right things.    But they teach them in the wrong way.

Which is to say that they teach the right technical things.

But they present it like an advertisement, like they were trying to sell you something.

And this encourages you to make your work like an advertisement, like you were trying to sell them something.

But it matters if you are doing it for the right reason.

You might do all the right things.  But if you are doing it to pull a fast one on your public, to play them and make money off them, it will be shallow and superficial.

It really matters if you are doing it for the right reasons.

To help people.

To make people happy.

To please yourself without harming others.

If you do it for one of these reasons, you will go farther.    For these are some of the right reasons.

And in these videos they teach the right things, but they teach them as scientific rules.

Scientific rules do not work in art and storytelling.

Feeling matters.

You can be doing all the right things technically, but if you aren't feeling it, it will fall flat.

You need to feel it.

You.

If you feel it, someone else will too.

You need to feel it yourself.

Feeling matters.

And this Youtube channel is teaching all the right technical things.    But it it presenting it like an aggressive advertisement, like they are trying to sell you something, which encourages you to do the same.  And they present it as scientific rules.  Which does not work.  If you aren't feeling it, it doesn't matter if you are getting the rest right.  For it's the feeling that matters.

And so that's my advice on this page.    Make sure you are doing it for the right reasons.  And just for fun is one of the right reasons.  If you're doing it just for fun, you are doing it for the right reasons.  As long as no one gets hurt, and most art cannot come close to hurting anyone, especially if it is just for fun.    And make sure that you do it with feeling- feeling that you love!  Because feeling matters!

God loves you!  Keep writing or creating!

Sincerely,

David S. Annderson
