Perhaps you've heard of this.
Sometimes you hear of people being afraid that you can get cancer from the electromagnetic radiation emitted by cell phone towers and things like that.
I'm here to tell you why you can't get cancer from cell phone towers.
Electromagnetic radiation is light.
Radio waves, infared waves, gamma rays, you name it. It's all different forms of light.
But there is a difference- and that is how energetic each photon is.
It's like the difference between a baseball thrown by Nolan Ryan and a ping pong ball thrown by Nolan Ryan.
You can get hurt if you are hit by a baseball.
But if you are hit by a ping pong ball you won't get hurt, even if it is thrown by Nolan Ryan.
You can get hit by a hundred ping pong balls thrown by Nolan Ryan. A thousand. And still you won't get hurt.
Now, how radiation hurts us and gives us things like cancer is nothing mysterious.
It's simply our molecules getting hit by photons or other radiation and getting hurt, just like a tree hit by a Cadillac.
And light is perhaps like a tennis ball.
Ultraviolet light is perhaps like getting hit by a baseball.
And something lower on the scale, like infared rays, is like being hit by ping pong balls.
And cell phones and cell phone towers, and all the things like that, use radio waves.
Radio waves are way on the low energy end of the scale.
Getting hit by radio waves is not like getting hit by ping pong balls.
It's more like getting hit by a swarm of gnats.
Radio waves are so insubstantial that the idea of getting hurt by them is like the idea of getting a broken bone because Nolan Ryan threw a feather at you.
There is simply no way that radiation that insubstantial can hurt your molecules.
If visible light cannot give you cancer, radio waves certainly can't.
Other than nutrinos, there is nothing as insubstantial in all the universe as radio waves.
And this is why you can't get cancer from cell phone towers.
Because other than nutrinos, radio waves are the last thing that is gonna give you cancer.
Radio waves will heat you up and make you uncomfortable long before they will give you cancer.
