A few days ago in my dreams I was singing 'Loch Lomond', the great Scottish folksong, just before I woke up. And as I woke up I wondered, 'what did happen to the Scottish Highlanders? What caused their downfall?'
They refused to accept the rule of law- they refused to accept the rule of any law but their own. And so when the British isles were united, and the English civil war had passed, at the end of the 17th Century, the Scottish highlanders were the only ones interrupting the peace and unity across the whole of Great Britain.
And so they got kicked out of the Scottish Highlands and had to find a new home.
And many of them made a good new life somewhere else.
Somewhere else like...
And then I realized- and many of the Scottish Highlanders must have come to America.
And become my ancestors.
My ancestors!
For many of the Scottish people in America were probably Scottish Highlanders!
And that is what happened to the Scottish highlanders!
They came to America!
And built the 57 Chevy!
And saved the world in World War II!
And revived the world after World War II!
And landed a man on the Moon!
And helped to create classic rock and the movies of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas!
For that is what happened to the Scottish highlanders!
They became part of America!
And that is quite a story.
So when you think of the Scottish Highlanders, that is their fate! Think of everything that is beautiful and good in America!
Because that is what happened to the Scottish highlanders!
And one of them is writing this piece, for one of them became David S. Annderson!
For my father's sister got genetically tested for ancestry, and my father has Scottish ancestors! (as well as other far-northerners from elsewhere north of the Alps!)
All my Irish ancestors are actually Scottish!
