In this, my fourth 'Tim Allen installment' (I did not plan it this way, I added comments because I wanted to be fair after criticizing him above), I want to focus on Tim Allen's legacy.
Which is this: Tim Allen is one of the great masters of serious ideas in comedy.
In the difficult medium of episodic television, no less.
In Home Improvement, there are innumerable times when Tim and Wilson discuss deep meaningful ideas.
Such as what brought me here- Wilson's contrasting superficial pleasure with deep joy, when Tim is distressed that Jill is infatuated with a guy.
Wilson explains that the other guy merely brings Jill superficial pleasure, while Tim, her husband, brings her something much deeper. They put this in terms of Dopamine vs. Endorphins.
In reality, dopamine very much is superficial pleasure, but there is no one brain hormone for deep joy, which comes from mind, not matter and the brain.
But it makes a perfect metaphor, and half of it is more than just metaphor.
(But endorphins are very much involved in family relationships, especially with our kids!)
The point is this- this is a discussion of deep, meaningful ideas in a 90's sitcom!
The character of Wilson was put there specifically so that Tim and Wilson could discuss deep, meaningful ideas on the show!
I am not a Republican Conservative. But I recognize that although we may have differences of opinion in politics, that Tim Allen discusses meaningful ideas in a thoughtful way on Last Man Standing as well.
I can tell that Tim Allen holds true to truth and a search for meaning on that show as well.
Which is why I still admire Last Man Standing.
Me and that show may have political differences. But the thoughtful discussion of ideas is very much something that I admire in that show as well.
So here I would like to pay my respects to a great master: Tim Allen.
A great master of serious meaningful ideas in comedy.
