The word 'America' is from Amerigo Vespucci, the Italian explorer who was supposedly the first person to realize that the lands described by Christopher Columbus were in fact a 'new world' and not the far end of Indonesia.
I just found out that the name 'Amerigo' means 'home ruler'.
Quite interesting given the role of the United States of America in the 20th Century!
Remember that it was America that revived the world from the World Wars- our 'home rule' was a good one!
