An Imaginary Conversation

I was just watching a very good episode of the Stargate TV series, based on one of my favorite movies, Stargate

When I found out that Roger Ebert hated the movie

He prefers movies like Sophie's Choice and Platoon

Gritty reality

Beautiful dreams and fantastic things are not realistic enough

And I imagined this conversation:

"Why don't you like Stargate? It has a good honorable depiction of the people in the military who defend our civilization when we need them, going to fantastic places."

"If I want to see a movie about the military I will watch a movie about the Iraq War"

"How about a story where the US Military rescues a foreign scientist in a war who then goes on to develop a technology that allows us to boldly go where no one has gone before?"

"That's hogwash. Things like that don't happen in real life."

" I just described the rescue of Wernher von Braun and the creation of NASA."

Things like Stargate happen in real life.

NASA is one of them.

Don't buy into 'gritty reality'.

It ain't real.

Beautiful things and fantastic things Are real.

Very real.

God loves you!

Sincerely,

David S. Annderson
