Animation is not just for kids.
If a filmmaker were to make a movie like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Lord of the Rings, or Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind in animation, it would not be just for kids any more than Star Wars and E.T. are.
And so I recommend for you the great masterpieces of animator Don Bluth in the 80's.
For The Secret of NIMH, The Land Before Time, An American Tail, and All Dogs go to Heaven are not just for kids any more than Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan or Close Encounters of the Third Kind are.
These are movies made from the same storytelling substance as the great masterpieces of the era of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, among the signature masterpieces of the age.
Watching The Secret of NIMH for the first time as an adult was a revelation for me.
An American Tail and The Land Before Time have children as their lead characters, but so does the novel Huckleberry Finn and the early parts of Forrest Gump.
The Secret of NIMH is seen through the eyes of a young mother trying to save her children. These are not just movies for kids.
Being animation, these movies can explore fantasy territory that would be really hard to do otherwise, like the life of a society of dinosaurs in the age of dinosaurs looking for a new home in the face of climate change and a changing land, or the growing pains and struggles of a secret hidden civilization of intelligent rats as it struggles to chart its course toward the future.
And so, a recommendation: the masterpieces of Don Bluth of the 80's, The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, The Land Before Time, and All Dogs go to Heaven.
For you consideration, alongside the masterpieces of George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and Miyazaki.
God loves you!
Sincerely,
David S. Annderson
P.S. I as a writer am descended in part from Don Bluth, he is a central influence in me as a writer alongside George Lucas and Steven Spielberg!
