George Lucas is known as the king of wooden dialogue.
And I love, love, love George Lucas's dialogue.
It may not be pretty and fancy and poetry.
But there is a reason that Star Wars is the most quoted movie of all time.
Because while others (like me, perhaps) write beautiful dialogue, George Lucas spends his effort writing the best dialogue for the scene, for the character, for the story.
Not the prettiest, most poetic words.
The words that work the best with that character, with that moment in the story, with that scene and its visuals, and that sound good and are short and sharp and catchy and easy to remember.
And so you get dialogue that, stripped away from its context, sounds wooden
But if you are like me, you cannot strip it away from that context. Because its context is so memorable.
And you have only to hear the line, and that character, in that scene, in that point in the story comes back.
And George Lucas's dialogue is so, so brilliant for that character in that scene in that point in the story.
And that is why this poet and writer Love, love, loves George Lucas's dialogue!
Thank you, George Lucas!
God loves you!
Sincerely,
David S. Annderson
