Vietnam War Spring 2012

The Vietnam War was a long costly war that pitted the communist regime of North Vietnam and its southern allies, known as Vietcong, against South Vietnam and its principal ally, the United States. More than 3 million people were killed in the Vietnam War, more than half were Vietnam citizens. It was the longest war in American history and the most unpopular American war of the twentieth century. It resulted in nearly 60,000 American deaths and an estimated 2 million Vietnamese deaths. Many Americans still ask whether the American effort in Vietnam was a necessary war in effort to protect the South Vietnamese from a totalitarian government.
