The Monarchy

    • King Kamehameha The Great

      • The first king of the Kingdom of Hawaii. He is responsible for joining the islands.

    • Queen Ka'ahumanu

      • Held power after King Kamehameha. She changed the way women were viewed in the monarch and in the community. She was a very strong, powerful woman who commanded respect. During the time of her rule, congressional missionaries arrived in Hawaii, which in turn influenced Hawaii's culture and views.

    • David Kalakaua-"Merrie Monarch"

      • Elected King in 1874. He had a deep love for his Kingdom. He brought the culture back to Hawaii and enjoyed the good life that came with being King. He "revived" the people, which is why he was much loved. There is now a week long festival dedicated to him.

    • Queen Liliuokalani

      • The last monarch of Hawaii. Queen Liliuokalani was trying to restore power back to the monarchy, but instead got in over her head. The white business men of Hawaii were trying to overthrow her, they did not like her politics and the choices she made. The white men over threw her in 1983. Hawaii had no choice but to be annexed by the United States.
