Background

World War 1 was also known as the Great War. It started off as an international conflict between Austria-Hungary and Serbia in 1914. It escalated quickly within the first 4 years. By 1918, 32 other countries had been involved including the United States. The Central Powers was made up of Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire joined the war siding with the Central Powers on October 29, 1914. Bulgaria joined them on October 14, 1915. Within the Allied Powers, the main countries were Britain, France, Russia, Italy and the United States. They fought against the Central Powers. The first global conflict had claimed the lives of 9-13 million people.
