The Spanish American War

The Spanish American War started when Spain controlled Cuba for its resources. Many Americans did not like how Spain was treating Cuba with repressive force to stop the Cuban independence movement. In 1898, the United States finally declared war on Spain affecting the decisions of not only Cuba, but also Puerto Rico, the Philippines and Guam. The Spanish American War is related to U.S. foreign policy because the United States had decided to declare war with another country outside its borders. The United States wanted to help Cuba because of Cuba's geography and its natural resources like sugar and coffee.
