How It Ended
In March 2003, U.S. forces invaded Iraq vowing to destroy Iraqi weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and end the dictatorial rule of Saddam Hussein. When WMD intelligence proved illusory and a violent insurgency arose, the war lost public support. When Saddam was captured, he put on trial. He was sentenced to death by hanging, after being convicted of crimes against humanity. Saddam had requested to be shot rather than hanged, but this request was denied. The Execution of Saddam Hussein occurred on December 30th, 2006, of course going out by hanging. The war that seemingly had no end in sight, finally came to a close.
