Monroe Doctrine of 1823

Summary

The Monroe Doctrine is a statement well known by the Great Powers of Europe then became a long-lasting, significant statement of the U.S. foreign policy. President James Monroe first stated the Monroe Doctrine during the State of the Union Address to Congress. President Monroe was concerned that Spain would reclaim authority in the Western Hemisphere. The Napoleonic Wars also inspired the Monroe Doctrine.
