U.S. Annexation of Hawaii

On February 1, Minister John Stevens recognized the new government of Sanford B. Dole. He announced that the island of Hawaii was now a United States protectorate. Sanford B. Dole offered a treaty of annexation. Presented to the United States Senate, many Democrats opposed this. A majority of Hawaiians wanted to be annexed by the United States, of course they were the mostly white businessmen. Eventually, the island was formally annexed by the United States in 1898. As soon as the final monarch was thrown off the throne, President Benjamin Harrison presented another treaty to annex the Hawaiian island. They gave it to the United States Senate for ratification. The last monarch was kicked off by businessmen. After being jailed, they also captured 1.75 million acres of Hawaiian land.
