Vietnam War

Vietnam is one of the longest wars in the history of the United States. U.S involvement in the war lasted more than 10 years. The war resulted in a casualty of about 60,000 American deaths and an estimated 2 million for the Vietnamese. Part of the U.S foreign policy during the Cold War was the communism containment strategy. The reason for U.S involvement was to stop the spread of communism. Communism was frowned upon in America during the Cold War era. Based on the U.S domino theory, which believed that if one territory falls to communism, other regions would also follow, thus forming a chain of reactions that would strengthen communism presence in southeast Asia. The war was fought between North Vietnam - backed by the Soviet Union and South Vietnam - backed by the United States. The war ended with the fall of Saigon(South Vietnam capital) in April 1975 to the hands of North Vietnamese army. As a result, the country of Vietnam was unified as a communist country. Until this day, many Americans still question whether our involvement in the conflict was justified, or was it wasted effort where 60,000 soldiers died for nothing.
