- For almost 20 years, Vietnam was separated and battled against each other for power. First controlled by the French, South Vietnam was in the fight of their lives to become independent. After the withdrawal of the French, the United States become involved in helping fight the Viet Cong and keep from spreading communism around to other countries. This ties into the foreign policy unit because it demonstrates the values and views of the United States toward democracy.
