How It Affected the World

There were issues between the Balkans and Europe. Archduke Franz Ferdinand was to take over the Austrian-Hungarian throne, but he Gavrilo Princip assassinated Ferdinand and his wife on June 28, 1914 in Sarajevo, Bosnia. This was because nationalists didn't want to be a part of the empire. Kaiser Wilhelm II told Austria-Hungary that he would go along with their plans for war on July 5. Austria-Hungary's conditions for Serbia were not considered. Declaration of war came from Austria-Hungary on July 28. It was Serbia, Russia, Great Britain, France, and Belgium against them and Germany that started World War I.

President Woodrow Wilson gave his Fourteen Points speech and the League of Nations was part of it. The purpose of the League was to prevent war. The devastation of World War I made the Allies want to use Woodrow Wilson's idea of the League of Nations. Even though it was Wilson's idea, Congress did not pass for the United States of America to be a part of the League. 1919 was when it was officially created and based in London, then Geneva. The next year 48 countries were in the League. Sometimes countries didn't want to give away their power to the organization when they needed to resolve an issue. However, they dealt with many issues between countries. 1933 was when Adolf Hitler separated from the League of Nations. He later was the reason it fell apart as Hitler continued to take over other countries in 1940.

Adolf Hitler was born in Austria and then in 1913 traveled to Munich, Germany. He asked the Bavarian king if he could join the 16th Bavarian Reserve Infantry Regiment and he did. In 1914, Hitler first fought in Belgium during World War I. Germany lost and received consequences for the war through the Treaty of Versailles. 1919 was the year Hitler became a member of the German Workers' Party which was later renamed the Nazi Party that he became leader of. WWI gave the party support as Germans were upset about the outcome of the war. Adolf Hitler was against Marxism and Jewish people. His antisemitism later led to the Holocaust. He used the Great Depression as a way to convince Germany to support the Nazi Party. Hitler became chancellor of Germany on January 30, 1933.
