The Monroe Doctrine of 1823

The Monroe Doctrine of 1823 was a U.S policy opposing European colonialism in the Americas beginning in 1823. President James Monroe at the time had a message to congress containing the Monroe doctrine, warning European powers not to interfere in the affairs of the western hemisphere. The doctrine warns European nations that the U.S wouldn't tolerate further colonization. The Monroe Doctrine was invoked in 1865 when the u.s Goverment exerted diplomatic and military pressure support of president Benito Jaurez. This support enabled him to lead a successful Revoit against the emperor Maximilian, who had been placed on the throne by the french Goverment. Almost 40 years later in 1904, European creditors of a number of Latin american countries Threatend intervention to collect debts.
