Causes of War

There were many key factors that played a role in the United States going to war with Spain. The were humanitarian concerns, the economic, yellow journalism, U.S.S. Maine explosion, and DeLome letter.

Humanitarian Concerns:

    • there was poverty

    • imprisonment

    • cruel treatment

    • reconcentration camps

Economics:

    • the United States had businesses there. ( sugar plantations, banks, hotels)

    • War in Cuba was costing the Americans business money

Yellow Journalism:

    • created exaggerated stories

U.S.S. Maine Explosion:

    • 268 Americans died

    • "State of the Art ship destroyed

    • Spain was blamed for the explosion even though they don't know what really happened.

DeLome Letter:

    • the letter was critical of the U.S President

    • they thought that peaceful negotiations were going to be unlikely
