SADDAM HUSSEIN

“Arabs and other Muslims generally agreed that Saddam Hussein might be a bloody tyrant, but, paralleling FDR's thinking, "he is our bloody tyrant." In their view, the invasion was a family affair to be settled within the family and those who intervened in the name of some grand theory of international justice were doing so to protect their own selfish interests and to maintain Arab subordination to the west.”

Samuel P. Huntington, The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order

Who is Saddam Hussein?

PRESIDENT OF IRAQ from 1979-2003, Hussein's brutal ruling will forever be remembered in world history. Born into poverty on April 28, 1937, Saddam had a rough child hood which resulted him to join the violent political group Ba'th Party in 1957. During his time of serving them, he was apart of the failed attempt to assassinate former Prime Minister of Iraq Adb al-Karim Qasim, and he received an education from Cairo Law School during the groups one year of reign. 1963 was the year they gained control of Iraq and got overthrown. He then spent a few years in prison and planned how to get power of Iraq again. When he escaped, he became leader of the party and replenished their power in 1968. Eleven years later he assumed the position of President of Iraq. His goals were to make Iraq the number leading Arab nation in the world instead of Egypt. He first invaded Iran's oil field in 1980, but due to economical circumstances their weren't many moves being made until 1998 when both countries had to ceasefire.

His involvement:

WHEN UNITED NATIONS intervened and demanded Iran and Iraq to stop fighting in 1988, there was never a set peace treaty put in place. When the meeting went well between the ministers of both nations at Geneva in July the situation seemed to get better. And Saddam Hussein also said he was going to dissolve any conflict and return territory Iraq conquered. Two weeks later, a speech Hussein delivered stated otherwise. He addressed Kuwait as a westernized colony that was a bogus state of the Iraqi coast. He also claimed Kuwait of taking crude oil from the Ar-Rumaylah oil fields that can be found very close to the common border. Since he accused Kuwait of making secret deals to sell their oil at a lower price in order to retain western oil buyers, Hussein demanded Kuwait and Saudi Arabia to both pay out Iraq's 30 billion dollar debt of foreign expenses. Along with this speech, he began sending troopers to Kuwait's border to prepare for invasion. Surrounding Arab nations unexpectedly called foreign military forces to help fight against him.
