Key Events of the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine of 1904

A crisis in the Dominican Republic, where their government stopped paying debts of over $32 million to a multitude of nations, caused President Roosevelt to reformulate the Monroe Doctrine. First started in May of 1904 and later had an expansion in an annual message to congress in December of the same year; Roosevelt then stated it would be addressed as his corollary of the Monroe Doctrine. For the fact that European countries were invading Latin America the Monroe Doctrine had been intended to keep them out. The Roosevelt Corollary was used as a justification for American intervention in Latin America. Publicly responding in America was highly favored, it was a reflection of the wide spread support for imperialistic attitudes and actions. Many European responses were quietly supported, especially from the interest of the creditor who were pleased in helping collect their debts.
