Henry Cabot Lodge

"The United States is the world's best hope," Lodge once said, "but... if you tangle her in the intrigues of Europe, you will destroy her powerful good, and endanger her very existence... Beware how you trifle with your marvelous inheritance -- this great land of ordered liberty. For if we stumble and fall, freedom and civilization everywhere will go down in ruin."

-Henry Cabot Lodge

Henry Cabot Lodge was President Woodrow Wilson's foe. He was a senator for Massachusetts and opposed to Wilson's fourteen point peace plan. He was a conservative and wanted the fourteen point peace plan to work in favor of the United States and insisted that Wilson should modify the peace plane. Wilson refused to modify his plan.

Lodge, as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, assuredly would not let the Treaty of Versailles would be defeated, to prevent American involvement in the League of Nations.
