Key Events

In May of 1941 Ho Chi Minh created the Viet Minh, which was a League for the Independence for Vietnam.

In 1950 the Viet Minh receives weapons from China and military help. In that same year the U.S. dedicates $15 million for military aid to help France fight in the Vietnam War.

In 1954 the French suffer a defeat in one of the battles and later withdraws from Vietnam. This created a momentary boundary between South and North Vietnam.

In 1964 North Vietnam attacks two U.S. destroyers, which were combatant ships. As a result, the United States Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution.

In 1965 the first of U.S. troops arrive in Vietnam.

In 1969 President Nixon orders some U.S. troops to withdraw from Vietnam. Later that year, communist leader, Ho Chi Minh, dies.

Throughout the following years more attacks take place.

In 1973 the last of the U.S. troops are withdrawn.

In 1975 South Vietnam surrenders to the communists.
