Monroe Doctrine

President James Monroe delivers his annual message to Congress and calls for a bold new approach to American foreign policy that eventually became known as the “Monroe Doctrine.” The Monroe Doctrine was a doctrine first stated by President James Monroe, the 5th president. Due to the Napoleonic wars the Monroe Doctrine was created. The Doctrine was based on fears of Americans on the possible revival of monarchies in Europe. This was to secure the newly independent colonies of Latin America from European intervention and control.
