Key Events

    • 25, 1898 ~ The United States declares on Spain for annexation of Western Pacific, and Latin American lands.

  • May 1, 1898~ The battle of Manila Bay. It was the first battle between the United States and the Spanish forces. The U.S Asiatic Squadron destroyed the Spanish fleet at Manila Bay in the Philippines. 400 Spanish sailors were killed, and 10 warships were wrecked.

    • June 22, 1898~ The first U.S troops landed on Cuba. 25,000 U.S troops were stationed in Tampa, Florida for months because of its close proximity to Cuba.

    • July 1, 1898~ U.S forces destroy the Spanish forces at the Battle of San Juan Hills, Cuba. In May 1898, The U.S Army Fifth Corps fought their way to Santiago's outer defense, and on July 1 General William Shafter made an order to attack San Juan Hill and Kettle Hill. Among the U.S troops were the "Rough riders", a group of western cowboys and Eastern blue bloods, known as the First U.S Voluntary Cavalry. The Rough Riders were order to take part on the invasion of Kettle Hill, and were the first up Kettle Hill. Taking over kettle Hill, helped U.S troops to take San Juan Hill soon after.

    • July 3, 1898~ U.S Cuba forces destroy the Spanish fleet in Santiago Bay, Cuba. The Battle of Santiago Bay marked the end of Spanish power in the western hemisphere. 1,800 Spaniards died, and their ships were either burned or sunken.

    • July 17,1898~ Spaniards surrender at Santiago de Cuba. Two weeks later after The Battle of Santiago Bay Spain surrender Cuba to the United States, with only one American wounded, and one dead.

      • August 12, 1898~ The U.S and Spain sign the Protocol of Peace. The United States signed a cease-fire agreement with Spain, which granted independence to Cuba,and gave the U.S nation power over Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippine Islands.

    • December 10, 1898~ The Treaty of Paris signed by the United States representatives and Spanish representatives.
