Operation Cyclone

Aiding Anti-Soviet Mujahideen Forces In Afghanistan

Operation Cyclone was the code name for a CIA program to arm and finance the Afghan Mujahideen forces from 1979 to 1989. It leaned on supporting militant Islamic groups that were favored by Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq and it was one of the longest and most expensive covert CIA operations; with funding beginning at around $20 million per year and reaching to $630 million.
