The Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union lasted for decades and resulted in anti-communist suspicions and international events that led the two superpowers to the edge of nuclear disaster. The Cold War reached its peak in 1948–1953. The United States and its European allies formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
