Top 5 things you may not know about the Declaration of Independence

    1. The Declaration of Independence wasn't signed on July 4, 1776. On July 4, Congress officially adopted the Declaration of Independence. New York delegates didn't officially give their support until July 9. Most of the delegates signed on August 2, but Elbridge Gerry, Oliver Wolcott, Lewis Morris, Thomas McKean and Matthew Thornton, signed on a later date.

    2. When news of the Declaration of Independence reached New York City, it started a riot. July 9, 1776 a copy of the Declaration of Independence had reacher New York City.

    3. There was one person that did not sign the Declaration of Independence that was suppose to and that was, Richard Stockton. On November 30, 1776, was captured by the British and thrown in jail. After continuous harassment he recanted.

    4. On December 23, 1941, the signed Declaration along with the Constitution were removed from public display.

    5. There is something that is written on the back of the Declaration, which says "Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776."
