Key Events

Key Events: June 25, 1950- July 27, 1953- Once World War II had came to and end in 1945, Korea was freed from Japanese control, North Korea was occupied by the Soviets, while South Korea was occupied by American forces. By 1948, the country was cut in half at the 38th parallel with capitalist South run by Syngman Rhee and a communist Kim Il Sung. The Soviet troops eventually withdrew from North Korea and the American troops also withdrew in 1949. However, both North and South Korea would not accept the border between them and the North Koreans attacked South Korea in 1950, and therefore, advancing across the border. North Korea defeated and dominated much of South Korea while capturing the capital city, Seoul.

Eventually they occupied the whole of South Korea and pushed for Pusan. The United States identified this as an issue because they didn’t want other countries following and or being influenced by this ideology.
