American Revolution

Like most wars the American Revolution was a political upheaval . The Thirteen

American Colonies broke free of the British Empire in order to form our independent

nation later known as the United States. After the victory of the British in the French

and Indian War, the British adopted a policy imposing direct taxes known as the

Stamp Act.

Because there was no elected representation for the colonists, they felt the new laws

were illegitimate and a violation of their rights. They decided to break free of liberal

republicanism and gradually build a democracy. The upheaval only gave birth to the

core political values of the United States.
