Latin America was related to the enormous growth of the American economy around nineteenth century. This spectacular growth accompanied the centralization of the federal government's bureaucracy and the establishment of a truly national state.

If the growth of the American economy was extremely great in the late 1800s, it was also volatile and loosed potentially disruptive energies upon a nation grappling with the promise and costs of industrialization.
