Emilio declared independence of the Philippine island on June 12, 1898, and in he became president in January 1899.
The Filipinos thought that a U.S. defeat of Spain would result in a free Philippines but that wasn’t the case and they declared war against the U.S. After the war Emilio was captured by the U.S. military and declared allegiance to the U.S.
By the end of the war there were more than 40,000 Filipino and 4,000 American soldiers dead in 1902.
