Key Events

    • Emilio declared independence of the Philippine island on June 12, 1898, and in he became president in January 1899.

    • The Filipinos thought that a U.S. defeat of Spain would result in a free Philippines but that wasn’t the case and they declared war against the U.S. After the war Emilio was captured by the U.S. military and declared allegiance to the U.S.

    • By the end of the war there were more than 40,000 Filipino and 4,000 American soldiers dead in 1902.
