1823: The Monroe Doctrine was established.

1865: The Monroe Doctrine was invoked when the U.S. government exerted diplomatic and military pressure in support of the Mexican president. The support initially enabled the Mexican president Benito to lead a revolt against Maximilian who was emperor (Milestone Documents).The French had installed Archduke Maximilian of Austria as head of a puppet government in Mexico. The U.S. declared this situation as a violation against the Monroe Doctrine. Later the French paid less attention to Maximilian and the Mexicans executed him.

1895: Grover Cleveland had made an attempted to invoked the Monroe Doctrine but this process unfortunately failed. He tried to compel the British to accept arbitration in a border dispute between Venezuela and British Guiana.

1904: About 40 years later the European creditors of a number Latin American countries threatened armed intervention to collect debts (Milestone Documents).

1962: Monroe Doctrine was invoked symbolically when the Soviet Union began to build missile-launching sites in Cuba (Milestone Documents). After several days the Soviet Union agreed to withdraw the missiles because of John F. Kennedy threw a naval and air quarantine around the island.
