July 4th, 1776

America Declares Independence

The date represents the signing of the American Declaration of Independence from the colonial rule from Great Britain. The Monroe Doctrine could not have happened if America was not released from King George's powerful enforcement. Monroe's stand also represents an effort, decades later, to make other countries recognize America's place in the world influencing other nations to take a stand and fight for their independence.

October 20th, 1803

Louisiana Purchase

Napoleon controlled a large portion of America during his time of conquering other European countries. He sold the land to America, and thus America expanded further out to the west.

September 6th, 1810 - August 24th, 1821

Mexican Independence with the Treaty of Córdoba

Mexico began fighting Spain for independence in 1810. It was not until Napoleon forces that allowed Mexico to gain an advantage and finally gained freedom from colonial rule.

July 5th, 1811

Venezuela Declares Independence

Venezuela declared independence grasped at the opportunity after the Spanish colonial was weakening. It went through till 1821 and lingering few battles into 1823. This was one of the countries that were offered to be protected in the doctrine because it was in one of the two Americas.

June 9th, 1816 - January 8th, 1815

Argentina Declares Independence

Argentina had also begun fighting against Spain in the year 1810. The tension brewed between people of Spanish descent born in the country and newly arrived Spaniards until the people born in the Americas manage to overthrow the Spanish authority and government.

March 14th, 1817

James Monroe Inaugurated President of the United States

Monroe was initiated into the office and thus his power was soon noticed.

1817-1818

First Seminole War

Andrew Jackson was ordered to capture runaway slaves that hid with Seminoles ( A Native American tribe). During that time he managed to Capture a Spanish fort in Pensacola. Andrew Jackson noted that the reason he did that was that Monroe secretly told him to do so/

February 22nd, 1821

Adams-Onís/Transcontinental Treaty Goes into Effect

This treaty was written to end the First Seminole War but was not put into effect until 1820.

The Adams-Onís treaty was negotiated by John Quincy Adams and Louis de Onís of Spain. the treaty gave all of Florida to the U.S., denied any claims to the State now known as Texas.

July 4th, 1822

John Quincy Adams' Address to Congress

Before the Monroe Doctrine, there was John Quincy Adams 4th of July Speech, the treaty foreshadowed the later President's address stating some of the same ideas that would later be stated. His speech was his reflection on Britain's imperialism on other countries and how to address the manner without getting into any conflict.

August 1823

George Canning Asks for an Alliance With Great Britain

Geroge Canning was a foreign minister of Britain asked Monroe and his office to form an alliance to prevent European countries to establish new colonies in developing countries in South and Central America. Adams influenced the decision of Monroe by telling him to make an independent state to comply with this situation.

December 2nd, 1823

Monroe's 7th Annual Address to Congress, a.k.a. the Monroe Doctrine

Monroe's speech was responding most directly to George Canning's proposed alliance.

President Monroe announced the doctrine in his 7th Annual Address to Congress, widely known as The Monroe Doctrine of 1823. Here he made it noticed that America should receive the recognition from the world and made a statement on Europe's idea to expand.

December 2nd, 1845

Polk Doctrine

In President James K. Polk first Annual Address to Congress, he reinforced Monroe's Doctrine to prevent Europe from trying to take over Oregon. He practiced using this doctrine to make a change in the world by not allowing other countries to conquer one another.

April 25th, 1846 – February 2nd, 1848

The Mexican-American War

Texas had been an independent republic since 1836. Although it contradicts Monroe's Doctrine, President Polk justified the entering of the new State.

April 25th, 1898 – December 10th, 1898

The Spanish-American War

Countries that are small islands such as Cuba and the Philippines had tried to gain their independence from Spain. The United States had established a relationship with Cuba with sugar and America took action after the Spaniards established their authority onto Cuba's population and Economy. After a suspicious destruction of the USS Maine that blew up in Havana, Cuba, a conflict began to emerge. Tension grew and a war broke out after the U.S declared war against Spain. America soon won the war and a treaty emerged which gave Cuba its freedom and The United States gained control of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines.

December 6th, 1904

Roosevelt Corollary

President Theodore Roosevelt brought attention to the Doctrine once again. He claims that America will serve as an international police for Latin America. Forming alliances with countries that we still have a relationship with today.
