Effects of the War of 1812

The war caused Britain and the United States to spend over $100 million on the war. Also the war called for the reconstruction of the White House after the British burned it down in August 1814. Luckily, President Madison and his wife were able to escape in time to avoid the attack. During the war, approximately 3,000 American slaves escaped to Canada. There were no geographical changes. The war simply resulted in a peace between the United States and Britain.
