Key Figures- The Big 3
President Woodrow Wilson was one of the most important key figures. He was a strong advocate of the League of Nations and believed the Treaty of Versailles would prevent future wars. He envisioned having lasting peace and had written the 14 points. He wanted armed forces of all nations reduced. President Woodrow Wilson was like a leader of the big 3 and had a big influence on the prime ministers of France and the United Kingdom.
Prime minister David Lloyd George of the United Kingdom was one of the 3, most influential figures in the debate. Personally, George had the same vision and goals as Wilson but he was affected by public opinion moving more towards the thinking of German Chancellor Phillip Scheidemann.
Prime minister George Clemenceau of France wanted Germany to pay dearly for the war including being stripped of land, industry and armed forces. He made it his goal to reconcile the needs of France with those of Great Britain and the United States as well. He defended France and forced a lot of his views on the British Prime minister. He insisted the Treaty be signed on June 28, 1919
German Chancellor Phillip Scheidemann resigned from the Treaty of Versailles rather than signing it because the terms were so hostile to Germany.
