In 1776 September 9th, the Congress changes the name of the "United Colonies" to the "United States of America". Congress changed the name because it showed a country that didn't have to deal with colonies and chose a name that reflected the nation as a unit.

In 1780, the first slavery abolition law passed in Pennsylvania. This law basically stated that every slave child that was born passed March 1780 they could be freed once they hit the age of twenty-eight. Once this was in act, it was said that they could not import any slaves into Pennsylvania but the children that are born into it. This was their first attempt to try to abolish slavery in the western hemisphere.
