How It Affected The United States
The U.S. was involve in the war to hold against the spread of Communism and The U.S. paid the French for the war against Communist Vietnam as a part of the Truman Doctrine. The United States spent over $200 billion dollars on the war.
In 1961, South Vietnam and the United States signed a military and economic aid treaty. In the earlier part of 1965 the United States began air raids on North Vietnam and Communist controlled areas of South Vietnam. By 1966 there were at least 190,000 US troops in South Vietnam.
In the countryside even the best ARVN units were strong enough to defeat the main forces. The communists were intentionally targeting U.S. military personnel and bases.
