President Grover Cleveland

President William McKinley

  • was born on March 18 1837

  • was the 22nd and the 24th president of the United States of America (he was the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms.)

  • his first term was from 1885-89, and his second term was from 1893-97

  • was born on January 29, 1843

  • serve from march 4, 1897- September 14, 1901

  • was the 25th president of the U.S

  • was best known because the William McKinley was president when the United States acquired Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines.

President Grover was opposed to annexing Hawaii and even went as far as trying to restore Queen Liliuokalani after she had been overthrown. Because President Grover was an anti-imperialist and because he though Americans had acted shamefully in Hawaii he decided not to annex Hawaii. President McKinley was not opposed to annex Hawaii because Congress and the president were fearful that Japan would decide to annex Hawaii which could bring Japan closer to the United States. Not only were they fearful Japan would annex the islands but the country was also aroused by the Spanish-American war. Once Hawaii was annexed it was not granted a state of the U.S until 1959 when it became the fiftieth state of the U.S.

The flag on the left only has 49 stars (prior to Hawaii being added as a state of the U.S). The flag on the right has 50 stars (our current flag).
